I've given blood for a while. Found it wasn't so bad and I don't look at the needle. Really, honest it's not that bad and people of all ages give blood. Mostly old people tho I've noticed. I've always wondered who gives blood. Do they vote? Are they mostly Repubs, Dems, or what?
So yesterday I went to give blood. Went to the VFW hall. Noticed no other lefty bumper stickers in the parking lot. There were a few of those yellow ribbon magnets but I've got one too. It's at a VFW hall and the radio inside is playing country music (not that there's anything wrong with that) and there's examples of right wing slogans around. However, I think giving blood is the great equalizer. No matter one's political beliefs if you're giving blood you can't be all that bad....More below the fold
This isn't going to be a great eye opening story about what happened at the VFW hall or some confrontation over blood giving but something happened that got me thinking....I had a sweatshirt on over my t-shirt. It is Maine and 15 degrees out but I thought I could just pull up the sleeve. No, had to take the sweatshirt off so the nurse could take my blood pressure. Hadn't planned it but there was my DEAN t-shirt. Nurse said, "I like him, didn't he just get elected something?" "Yes, I said, head of the Dem Party now." "He'll do well she said, a lot of energy and commitment." I also noticed a couple of smiles my way as I lay on the table pumping out my pint but also a couple of looks that were along the lines of "hunh, didn't know They gave blood too."
When there's a disaster (9/11 or other) people of all types come out and give blood but month in and out it's usually the same group who come out to give. So, WHAT IF...our growing community gave blood and wore their T-shirts, Dean or otherwise and showed up to give blood? Could it be a way to foster a degree of change in attitudes and latitudes?
