Call me stupid, but we are looking at a major problem in the future. As I see it, if we lose both the midterms this year and the elections in 2008, this country is going to be unrecognizable in a few years.
Hell, it already is.
Call me stupid, but if we invade and/or attack Iran (and I'd be surprised if BushCo doesn't do it before November), I think the world is going to turn its back on America for good. Over 200 years of international leadership and goodwill are going to get chucked in the toilet.
Hell, we're already on the way down the drain in THAT regard.
Call me stupid, but while I fully support the need for developing nations to establish solid economic growth and prosperity, our national compulsion to buy cheap goods at the expense of domestic jobs, the environment, and our own economy is going to drive down wages, the number of jobs, rates of return on domestic investments, and create a whole host of other problems.
Hell, just take a look at our trade and budget deficits. We're already beholden to half of Asia.
So significant other and I are formulating a plan. We're a-leaving, on a jet plane, to retire outside of the US. We're looking at countries with solid civil rights records, nationalized health care, and large expatriate communities. Places where we speak the language (we're both multi-lingual) and have at least a passing familiarity with the local culture.
Because we don't think we can afford to retire in the US, and we don't think we'd want to if the right wing bullshit keeps up.
We have about ten years to figure it all out.
Where would YOU go?
