Larry Sabato, the man who's made a career out of being the guy journalists go to for a quote which says what "everybody says". In the latest update of his website, the 'Crystal Ball', he crunches some potential ticket-mates for Howard Dean, and decides that...
...everybody's favourite Southwesterner,
Bill Richardson, is the man.
But much more interestingly, the two runners-up are two candidates who tend to get stuck in the second tier of Veepstake rounds here on Kos: Evan Bayh and Tom Harkin. I've always been ambivalent about the use of Harkin, but I think Bayh would be an inspired choice -- unlikely to be offered it and unlikely to accept it, but inspired if those two preconditions were met. Third place is a four-way tie between Senators Graham, Carl Levin (Mich.), Bill Nelson (Fla.) and Jay Rockefeller (W.Va.); fourth is a two-way between Edwards and Gephardt.
And, knowing Kos, about now people are crying, "Where's Clark?" Answer: Dead bottom, tied with Govs. Kathleen Sebelius (Kan.), Phil Bredesen (Tenn.) and Mark Warner (Va.). My preference for Warner is well known, but I think I've just about been bullied out of it.
