Over the course of the weekend, I've heard and read a number of references alluding to the fact that Bush believes he will "take Michigan." This talking point was repeated again this morning by E.D. Hill on FOX and Friends. Given that Michigan has been hit hard by the downturn in the economy, Bush has been no friend to the Great Lakes, and many Michiganians expressed outrage at the war in Iraq, this statement doesn't make sense. Unless, of course, you live in Bush world and you've got the evil Betsy DeVos as your state party chairman. When you read the link below, it becomes clear how the Anti-Gay Marriage Ammendment that is on the ballot here is really a low ploy in partisan politics to try to swing the state in Bush's favor.
Hate Ammendment Contributors
Interesting, that Mrs. DeVos, Michigan Republican Party Chair, who vowed, in March of 2004, that the president will win here this time because of his "record and vision," and the state party's "return to grass-roots fundamentals," the DeVos family, and Mrs. DeVos' mother, Elsa Price Brockhuizen, were the top donors to the "Hate Ammendment," contributing $ 125,000 to the Citizens for the Protection of Marriage PAC. That's more than 1/10 of all of the money raised for proposal!
Actually, it's not interesting, it's disgusting. Betsy DeVos is using a wedge issue, the Hate Ammendment, as an attempt to push up Bush's poll numbers in Michigan. And unfortunately, the Roman Catholic Church is doing all it can to help, sending out fliers that direct Catholic voters to vote for this ammendment, stating that "marriage is between one man and one woman."
This disgusts me. I don't think we'd even be voting on this issue if the feckless idiot, George W. Bush, wasn't running for President and Betsy DeVos wasn't in the driver's seat of the Michigan Republican Party. It's another example of the use of false morality for political gain. Exclusionary politics makes me angry, and we need to do all that we can to defeat this proposal in Michigan.
