Not being able to marry in the United States inflicts upon same-sex couples thousands of legal and financial disabilities. Very prominent among the "not for richer, definitely for poorer" problems come courtesy of U.S. and state tax law.
Gay and lesbian couples can't file joint returns, and one can almost never claim the other as a dependent, so not being able to file jointly usually means having to pay more taxes.
