You'll have to forgive me for this because, as a native of the UK, I realise that this isn't strictly my bunfight. Nevertheless, I'll say what I came to say and see what people think.
My point is simple, and I think it will strike a chord.
Most people in America, whether of the right or left, have a reverence for the Constitution. It is an important symbolic part of what it means to be American. It is a set of rules laid down for humanity to follow, to allow the better side of humanity to triumph.
And, for my money, it is the greatest document in the history of mankind.
So what in the name of Nature's God is going on?
(More over the fold.)
Since when did the Eighth Amendment become an optional extra, as if cruel and unusual punishment might be all right really, if you really felt like it and there was nothing on TV that night? Why is it that this has become a truism of American society?
Since when were pogroms acceptable? And the pursuance of state religion desirable?
When did it become all right to lock people up indefinitely, people convicted of nothing, 'just in case'?
We know whose fault this all is. That's quite obvious. But the Bush junta won't listen to us. Why should they? They're not interested in the Constitution; it's just something to manipulate or ignore as the mood takes them.
But who's letting them do it? Not you or I; we're doing our best but we can't do it on our own.
Who's letting them do it?
The Democratic politicians who allow the junta to lie, day in, day out, and not challenge them on it.
Damn it, the bloody thing's written down. Why do they dither?
In conclusion, send your local Democrat a copy of the Constitution today.
And tell the lazy git to read it. Once again, apologies for my foreignness, but a fascistic theocracy would be no more fun for me than you. Thanks for listening.
