Dunno if anyone has seen this yet, but DNC Vice-Chair Lottie Shackleford has a very strongly-argued
op-ed/press release on the DNC site about African Americans and Social Security.
(That's "African American former Little Rock mayor Lottie Shackleford," by the way. The RNC has never had an African American in the party leadership. But moving on ...)
Over 33 million American seniors rely on Social Security. It's a program that serves as the sole source of income for 40 percent of African American seniors. It is a program that pays out a disproportionately high percentage of its disability and survivor benefits to African Americans.
But rather than acknowledging how important Social Security is to the African American community, Republicans are saying things like "African American males die younger, so Social Security isn't fair to them." But the fact that African Americans on average die at earlier ages than Whites isn't a Social Security problem, it's a serious health care problem; it's an economic disparity problem and it's an education problem - none of which the Republicans are addressing.
I like this. I'd really like to see Lottie sent on TV to explain very s-l-o-w-l-y to mouthbreathing TV hosts why 1.)Social Security is good for blacks and 2.)Republicans are being cold-hearted and near-racist when they say blacks die younger and always will.
I'd also like someone, if not Lottie, to go on a show, wait for a Republican to trot out the "blacks die younger line," and ask: "Sir, why do African Americans die younger than white Americans? Is it genetic?"
And then we can watch the GOPer insert his foot firmly inside his mouth and halfway down his throat.
