Hate Amendment couldn't garner bare majority in Senate

Wed Jun 07, 2006 at 08:35:36 AM PDT

The vote for cloture failed 49-48. Not only did they fail to even bring this thing up for a vote, far short of the 60 votes they needed, but the haters couldn't even muster up a bare majority.

All Dems except Ben Nelson and Robert Byrd voted against cloture (Rockefeller and Dodd didn't vote). 7 Republicans broke with the party and also voted against cloture: Snowe, Collins, McCain, Sununu, Chafee, Gregg and Specter. Gregg and Specter had voted for cloture in 2004, so they are pickups. I don't believe anyone who voted against the FMA last time switched sides this time.

They're losing ground. The forces of hate are on the wrong side of history on this issue. (Even Bennett admitted this last night as Jon Stewart beat him to a bloody pulp.) Progress marches on. And it may take a little longer than what we might hope, but full equality will happen sooner rather than later.
