The Forrester campaign is using Corzine's ex-wife statements to the New York Times and Star Ledger in 15 second commercial spots. A mark of a desparate campaign, to be sure. But will it work? I tend to think not. Rather, I think it will backfire on him. Absent physical abuse and kinky sex, I don't think most New Jerseyans care what the former Mrs. Corzine thinks about her ex-husband. Rather, they will view the Forrester campaign's use of these quotes as sleazy politics. I could be wrong. But we'll know on Tuesday.
Poll question to follow.
"With New Jersey's gubernatorial campaign dwindling to its final days, Republican Doug Forrester yesterday unveiled a television ad - complete with ominous music - that quickly and directly brings unflattering comments from his opponent's ex-wife into living rooms across the state.
The 15-second ad features a quote published in Wednesday's New York Times from Joanne Corzine, who divorced U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine two years ago after he had an affair with the president of the largest state employees union chapter.
"When I saw the ad where (Forrester's wife, Andrea) said, `Doug never let his family down, and he won't let New Jersey down,' all I could think was that Jon did let his family down, and he'll probably let New Jersey down too," the New York Times reported.
Democrats blasted the Forrester ad as a desperate move by a campaign trailing in the polls five days before Tuesday's vote and unveiled a response ad that highlights Corzine's plans for education, health care, property taxes and ethics.
The Corzine ad contends: "No last-minute negative attacks are going to stop him from protecting our families and our values."
. . . .
Corzine's response, expected to run heavily in the coming days, charges Forrester with employing "George Bush's smear tactics" and proclaims, "There's no place for Bush's politics of personal destruction in New Jersey.""
