Or so the great U2 song goes. I am, however, stating here that my new years resolutions are as follows:
1) Continue growing as a husband
2) Continue growing as a father
3) Continue growing as a progressive (city, state, country, world) citizen
#3 is the only real new one this year, and I promise it is a real change. I've been a progressive for my entire adult life. But I haven't done a damn thing about my views but vote and occasionally speak my mind.
So in 2005 I vow to DO things to advance progressivism, fight regressivism and republican advancement, and help the Democrats (they have their problems but the alternatives such as beefing up the Greens are IMHO too farfetched. so, fix and advance the Democrats). I still have a long ways to go in educating myself, so I can back up my views with facts and modify my views if the facts don't fit.
Specific plans I have to fulfill #3, all partially already in action, are:
(unfold please!)
A) Educate myself
B) Get involved in progressive communities on and offline
C) Contact local Democratic leadership and volunteer when possible
D) Voice my progressive views and question Right wing spin with Family, Friends, and Collegues, whenever prudent and possible
E) Create a
Tax Invoice page to show where Federal Tax money goes, to help stem the tide of radical anti-taxism, and promote the idea. People need to understand what taxes are for, why they are not evil, and that the alternative is less civilization and security. I hope to get this ready soon so that people can forward it around during tax season.
F) Work on a gerrymander proof computer program for State Districting to help places like Texas where gerrymandering is rampant
G) Build on my blog
the joe spin zone, become a better writer. Once I really get into the swing, I plan to invite anyone called Joe (Joels, JoAnnes, Jonahs, etc..) to contribute. If it makes sense...
I am sure I'll have more ideas this year. But I am not sitting back anymore. I am motivated to make this world a better place for my family, my country and my world. Hopefully I'm not the only one!
Here's to a kickass 2005 for Progressives! Lets take it back! Happy New Year.
