Just back from Kerry's economic address at Georgetown University. Some notes:
-- It was a strong speech overall, and made clear Kerry is attempting to wrest the mantle of fiscal responsibility from the GOP. He advocated a return to the Pay as You Go strategy, where if there isn't money to do it, some programs could be delayed at first, such as service initiatives. A spending cap would be applied to all but military, health, education and other necessary services.
-- Kerry also rebutted the Bush attack ads and announced that 98 percent of Americans would get a TAX CUT under him. The rest would return to Clinton-era taxes, which "worked fine in the 1990s." he said. Clearly he is aiming for the middle here, like Clinton.
-- Something that is sure to get some buzz: He made several glowing references to John McCain in the speech. He only referred to him and Sen. Hollings in the speech, in terms of his colleagues. He went on about his and McCain's corporate welfare bill. Right after doing so, he made a vague reference to our need to unite the GOP and Dems. Verrrrrrrry interesting.
And finally:
-- Carl Cameron smokes.
