Out in our neck of the woods we have an excellent blog called
Blatherwatch, which tracks local talk radio.
For those of you outside the Seattle area, Blatherwatch might be of limited utility. Of broader interest is the blog's motto :
Listening to talk radio so you don't have to ...
That's the niche Mike Hood fills for me on Blatherwatch, and the niche that Mike Stark fills for me on Daily Kos, so here's (I hope) a little help for him.
One of the ways the right wing retains a hold on white rural voters is by using short, pithy sentences that might have come from a Farmer's Almanac. It's "country wisdom," or at least it purports to be. It reinforces the right wing's "us against them" notion that Democrats or liberals are "urban elites" who are "out of touch" with "mainstream America."
We can beat them at their own game. We can all go to lyrics from Country and Western songs for our ammo.
In the case of "cut and run," your assignment, Mr. Stark, should you be willing to accept it, :-) is to call Rush, O'Reilly, or Hannity, or the braying jackass of your choice, and say something like:
Cut and run? What's with this cut and run? It's just like Kenny Rogers said: "You got to know when to hold them, and know when to fold them." This damn fool Bush can't do either one.
People will relate to that. Everybody knows "The Gambler." Everybody knows just what that line means.
You might follow it up with "how many of our soldiers have to die before this fool figures it out?"
I hope this is helpful. Let us know when you use it. Thanks for all your good work.
