It's probably too late, but I'm trying to think of any pitch that might draw a reaction from the Democratic senators who seem to be on the verge of laying down before the Medicare Bill. What if (and I say this as a Dean supporter, but you gotta do what you gotta do) people play to the Democratic establishment's fear of a Howard Dean nomination?
Gephart has been seen as the most loyal protector of programs for seniors and scored points against Dean on the Medicare issue, but if the Senate just rolls over on this, those who are taking out their wrath out on AARP right now are going to be looking for a responsive voice. With Gephart (along with Daschle) being seen by many as one of the leaders of the "let's be quiet and maybe it will all go away" strategy of 2002, they may turn to the one who's fighting back.
Perhaps writing comments to Democratic senators that quiet passage of the Medicare Bill will sew up the nomination for Dean (yea, make it dramatic!) might scare them into doing something.
Worth a shot.
