30 Days to Save the Mountains: Says Who?

Wed Oct 17, 2007 at 12:04:27 PM PDT

IntroDay 1Day 2

For the last two days, I've been telling you that the Clean Water Protection Act has 103 sponsors.  However, that's not true.  The bill now has 105 cosponsors as two more signed on yesterday.  And yesterday's gains --  Daniel Lipinski (IL) and John Halls (NY) are both on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which is the committee where the CWPA is currently waiting for attention.  So... hot damn!

Who are you joining when you ask your representative to support the Clean Water Protection Act?

You're joining our own Energize America.  Opposition to mountaintop removal and contour strip mining has always been a part of the Energize America plan.  But while early efforts included attempting to write our own legislation in this area, it was quickly recognized that supporting the CWPA offers the best chance to protect the mountains.  And there are better ways to get energy from the mountains than by chopping them down.

You're joining all the organizations that together make up I Love Mountains, including Appalachian Voices, Coal River Mountain Watch, Keepers of the Mountains Foundation,  Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (Go Kentucky!), the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, Save Our Cumberland Mountains, and Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards.  Volunteers at all these groups are working hard every day to halt the expansion of mountaintop removal.  Some of those volunteers also happen to be kossacks.  So why not take ten minutes to lend them a hand?

Please keep the momentum going.  Check the list of cosponsors to see if your representative is already on board.  If so, thank them and let them know this issue is important to you.  If not, it's even more important that you contact them and tell them to sign on.  Immediately.  It wouldn't hurt to follow up with a visit to the public comment page for the Bush administration's efforts to weaken existing laws and expand mountaintop removal mining.

And now... another helpful list of Democratic targets for today.  This time brought to you with the help of kossack faithfull, who saved me from having to visit all these web sites and scoop out the numbers.  Much appreciated.

Take a look after the break to see the kossacks who have already made calls, sent emails, or faxed... um, faxes to congressional offices.

My Heroes
These kossacks have taken a moment to contact a representative about the Clean Water Protection Act.  In some green future, when the mountains have been saved and the streams flow free, look for these names carved into the hillside No, no no!  Engraved on a nice plaque.  Sheesh.

If I missed anyone, please let me know.  I need to work out a little trophy for those kossacks who call multiple reps.
