BBC reports that Taiwan's election has ended with a close finish. President Chen Shui-bian narrowly won re-election, defeating Lien Chan of the nationalist Kuomintang party. Only 50,000 votes (0.5%) separated the two candidates.
Chen and his running mate, Vice President Annette Lu, were shot just before the election, but both survived and left the hospital. That shooting has mired the election in controversy, and Lien wants the results declared null and void. Lien had been expected to win the election....
Chen is arguably the left-leaning candidate here. However, in Taiwan that means he has a more aggressive posture on the independence issue. China opposes him.
