I was just reading the NY Times this morning and came across
this editorial of Paul Krugman in which he discusses the problems of Joe Lieberman and the surprising strength of the Lamont campaign in the Connecticut Democratic State Convention. Krugman provides an in depth analysis that demonstrates that the problem of Lieberman is not simply Iraq. Lieberman has consistently supported "Republican talking points" in many issues beyond Iraq, such as the social security and the Terri Schiavo case. Krugman is absolutely right.
Here is what I think: Joe is a "closet" republican. I hope no other democrats from the democratic establishment will come to Lieberman's support in an attempt to save his senate seat. The support that Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton gave to Lieberman's re-election campaign so far was highly inappropriate and does not speak well for these two high profile democrats. Lieberman will be defeated in the democratic primary, but for high-profile democrats that support Lieberman there will be long-lasting impressions long after Lieberman is gone.
