This isn't political--unless you consider the continuing problem of unafforable health care in the U.S.A.
Sweet Nectar
an event at Langston Hughes Theater on Friday, showcases all the top bellydancers and other ethnic dancers in Seattle. Very rarely--well, never--would you see all of these exciting performers together!
All proceeds go to benefit our sister dancer/teacher Elizabeth (left) who has overwhelming medical bills since recently being diagnosed with a serious condition.
Elizabeth is an exceptional dancer, much loved in our community. She's been part of the "Goddess Squad" studio in Ballard for years. So many wanted to participate in the benefit that their performances had to be limited to 5 or 6 minutes apiece.

A second smaller event was scheduled at Madison Cafe for last weekend, so even more could contribute. It was a wonderful evening of dancing and sisterhood. Elizabeth was serene and positive, as always.
Elizabeth has modeled for my costume books on many occasions (right). So graceful is she, I never have to coach her posing. She fashions her own costumes as well.
Last year, Elizabeth choreographed a duet with her housemate Habib. These are two of our most talented and popular dancers. Habib can do anything, but is known for "belly metal": bellydance to heavy metal music. Elizabeth's unique style is a fusion of Middle Eastern, classical Indian, and yoga. Music is anything from traditional Egyptian to "Moonlight Sonata".
Their first duet was the featured act of a super lineup at the Solstice Cafe. The SRO crowd was wild to see this, but as the two performers stood on the stage poised to begin (pictured) the music didn't start. After an awkward delay, it was determined that the CD player was refusing to play the CD, and also refusing to eject the disc. As performers, we find that rarely is there a show without SOME sort of technical or costume glitch!
Finally they apologized: "Technical problems--I guess we have to cancel." Someone yelled out "We're not leaving til we see this routine!" Everyone laughed, eventually someone managed to fix the problem and the show went on.
I guarantee a spectacular show in support of Elizabeth and our dance community on Friday night.
