Today's television in San Diego has been "All fire, all the time." With bush fires now covering 100,000 acres things are looking bleak, at least as far as getting some sort of control over things.
So far we've got a "local state of emergency" declared, but if things keep up you can expect to see Bush out here declaring a national emergency and demanding congress help us poor Californians out with Federal disaster relief.
Now, Bush can never explicitly come out and help his good friend, the Butcher of Bakersfield, out with the budget deficit. All those Republicans from states with equally bad deficits would never allow that. But demanding more money than strictly necessary and then siphoning a bunch of it off is straight out of the Iraq playbook.
Not that I'm claiming conspiracy in the government to burn down San Diego just so they can steal California at the next election, but I'm sure they'll do their best to make political hay out of the disaster.
