I've managed to get into screaming fights over the past few days with a lot of my conservative friends. I've realized it's happened for either one of two things....
- Blind (and I mean bliiiiiind) support of Bush is just harder to take these days.
- A creeping racism in the defensiveness of my conservative friends.
I know they're good people. But to keep hearing that these floating corpses we so horribly on TV shouldn't have expected "another entitlement from the federal government" sickens me to my very stomach. These typically good, honest conservatives, when it comes to politics these days, seem to always know who should live and who should die. And I'm getting very good at guessing the answer based on skin color. Coincidence, I know.
At what point is the theory of rationality completely gone. At what point do results COMPLETELY fail to matter? Are there any, any benchmarks that politicians must satisfy, outside of benchmarks of image and political popularity (notice RedState's attacks on Bush typically have to do with his message delivery, not his actions)?
Is there any way in the modern day to have a politcs of competency? And when the 5,000 or so dead of New Orleans is looked at with such apathy (hey, college football started last night, and they're still fishing the dead out of the water....and I happen to love college football), can there really be any meaningful dialogue between the politics of identity these days?
