Fallen eagle, charcoal on paper, April 26, 1986
The fallen eagle was my response to the accident at Chernobyl because it was the saddest image I could come up with. I felt that the world would never be the same.
It wasn't Reagan who brought down the Soviet Union, with his "Tear down that wall, Mr. Gorbachev." Chernobyl brought down the Soviet economy and they could no longer afford to maintain the Berlin Wall. Of course it is more complex and many factors weighed in but Chernobyl was a large one.
It is still controversial today. Casualty figures are disputed by advocates of (clean) atomic energy. I'm not a scientist, just an artist and the above was my reaction.
