This is my first Diary... BE KIND!!
I was listening to my local news this morning, & wondering why the Texas State Legislature cannot get an educational funding bill passed --- BUT THEY GOT THE BILL THAT HAD THEIR SALARY INCREASE PASSED TOOT-SUITE!!! I have to wonder who is doing the peoples business! Not the state legislature, and certainly not the U.S. Congress. It would seem to me that we as "the People" should have a say in when/how much/IF these folks should get a raise. With all the "extra" perks they get for going to state congress &/or U.S. Congress, they wouldn't need much of a salary-- most of them are worth over $1MM anyway, why should these legislators (state and national) be on the front end of the payraise line? I mean, they get LIFETIME MEDICAL at a very cheap price, they get LIFETIME pension on our nickel, they get for their lifetime (and sometimes the life of their spouse too) too many things that we, as in WE THE PEOPLE, can't afford.
I don't have any children, but it would seem that as legislators, they would want their children taught by people who are intelligent, creative, compassionate, and well paid. But apparently these legislators (on both sides of the ailes) consider their pockets more important than the teacher in their child's school. No wonder most of the kids coming out of school these days are goofball brats:
who haven't been taught any better than to get drunk in a foreign country and go off with strangers(I went thru Europe at 16 on my own);
who haven't got any respect for their own property much less anyone else's;
have no respect for themselves;
can't read;
can't do simple math; (i shouldn't talk there!!)
can't even fill out a job application correctly;
however, our Texas Legislature (and the U.S. Congress) have decided that their pockets need lining more than teachers need a raise. I can't see how these people can in good conscience vote themselves a raise with MY $$. I just think that there should be some checks/balances when state and U.S. congress's go to vote on a raise. They should be asking WE, THE PEOPLE if they should get a raise.
As I said, I don't have an stake in this fight, but I just can't help but think that there could be so much more educational funding for our children if these "asswipes" in congress (STATE & U.S.) weren't voting themselves a raise with OUR MONEY when they so obviously don't need it. I mean, how many of us got a salary increase commensurate with 6% cost of living? I'd venture to say VERY VERY FEW!!!
Just my 2 cents on education!!!!
