After reading an article in which Lawrence Korb, a former assistant Secretary of Defense for the Reagan administration, stated that a draft may be needed by the middle of next year (
http://www.sltrib.com/nationworld/ci_2631659), I had a few thoughts about forcing people to kill or be killed.
Why do you think the majority of my generation voted for Senator Kerry?
The sad reality is this, if the draft happens, my generation will loose our best and brightest in a godforsaken war based on despicable lies and greed. I may be slightly biased, but I think that's the biggest crime of all.
Couple this with the wanton disregard for the lives of the Iraqi people, and you've got some of the most disgusting war criminals ever. I've got a word for their actions: Murder.
These are the same people who have the audacity to claim to be "Pro-Life", but they've supported an immoral war, they cling to the notion that the Death Penalty is somehow morally different than the murders it's supposedly stops, and they showboat and disgrace a woman, her husband, and her grieving family for political gain, they send our jobs overseas, and they deny health care and quality educations to poor Americans. If that's "Pro-Life", then I want nothing to do with that term.
If their God is so petty, spiteful, hateful, violent, and vindictive, then that's not a God I would ever choose to worship, and I resent bitterly the forcing of their religious beliefs on those who disagree.
The God I choose to believe in is reflected in the following sermon: Matthew 5:3-10 (New International Version)
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
I choose to believe in a tolerant and merciful God.
But those in power right now abuse God in the most vile way, for mere greed and power. I would say shame on them, but I don't believe that they have the conscience to be upset by that.
As my dad would say, "I hope there's a special place in hell for these people." And I assure you, that's about as strong a statement as he ever makes.
May God have mercy on our souls.
