Just saw on the
front page of the NYT that John Ashcroft has resigned, as has Don Evans, Commerce Secretary.
The obvious question: where will these two (especially Ashcroft) wind up? Smart money has it that he will be the first Bush Supreme Court nominee, but I'm sure the official explanation for his current retirement is that he wants to spend more time "with family". Evans is likely to be pursuing opportunities in the private sector, i.e., finding ways to help companies suckle on the federal governments friendly teat.
Replacements? Speculation will run rampant for a while, but I think Rudy Guiliani would be a good choice, but Bush will only do this if he throws the Christianist Right a bone and disposes of Spectre. As for Evans, smart money is on another cycler through the public/private world of crony capitalism.
Money quote? "'The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved,. Ashcroft wrote in a five-page, handwritten letter to Bush." Been achieved? Didn't he see the bin Laden video?
