Marilyn Musgrave is evil. If you don't know who she is, just think of the Hate Amendment currently being promoted by select Republicans and our esteemed president.
Musgrove is the chief sponsor of the Marriage Amendment. She represents the Colorado 4th Congressional District which is, amazingly, potentially vulnerable.
Bush won the district easily, 57-36, but Musgrove had a tougher time, winning 55-42. And that margin actually masks how close the race was. Not only was Musgrove aided by the national tide that lifted all Republican candidates, but her opponent, Stan Matsunaka, ran out of money the crucial final weeks of the campaign. Observers expected this one to go to the wire.
Now Musgrave has the advantages of incumbency, and she's getting loads of press on her "I'm a hater" scheme. But Matsunaka proved that a conservative Democrat could play in the district, and given the proper funding, perhaps the Dems could make Musgrave sweat a bit, if not take her out completely.
The punchline? No Democrat has stepped up to the plate. Musgrave is thus far unopposed.
Update: Those Rocky Mountain Kossacks in the know say this would be a losing battle. Better to focus on Colorado CDs 3 and 7 (McInnis and Beauprez), says them. And they're right. And as a bonus, Beauprez is a Hate Amendment co-sponsor.
(So is Indiana Rep. Chris Chocola. So take a gander at the blogad on the left for Joe Donnelly.)
