This video from the BBC was first aired on March 29, 2006.
It is a short documentary about a group of Iraqi War Veterans who marched across the South into New Orleans to protest the war.
It's astounding. I defy anyone to watch this and not be moved. A lot of people will cry watching this.
It's simply an incredible story, an incredible piece of video, and the men portrayed here will touch you deeply.
It is especially timely, because they discuss, with obvious pain and distress, Haditha-like events. One of them says when he first got there "you could kill anybody you wanted". He said it was standard procedure, and hints that it came from above, to shoot anyone along the road, then plant a shovel on the body and claim they were planting IED's.
more over the bump
He says that after getting hit by several IEDs they would spray the surrounding areas and kill anything that moved. And they were told to do so.
One of them admits to killing farmers out in their fields, just for being near the IED blast. He says something like "the guy was just out there trying to make a living, but ...." and trails off.
Another admits to running over an Iraqi child. He is despondent.
Another admits to taking sleeping pills on top of sleeping pills, out of sheer depression, unable to start his day.
It's terribly sad and upsetting, but shows that this march is a transformation for these men. Ultimately the video is very uplifting and makes you just want to cheer these men.
You simply have to see it. Please recommend this, not for the diary, but for the video.
Of course our own country's "media" has totally dropped the ball on this. I didn't hear a word about this march when it happened.
Please watch it and pass it along. It's one of the most important and powerful videos I've seen regarding any of this.
Thanks.
