Have you ever checked out the blog called
Rigorous Intuition? It is a beautifully written and reasoned site that is SO "tinfoil hat" that it takes that concept right around the horn and then back again into what is essentially NEW reality-based territory. YOU know...if the opposition is creating new realities, the we have to beat them at their own game.
Well, here is one set of ideas from the writer of this blog, the Candian author Jeff Wells. It's worth reading, because he makes connections that so many of us have missed.
Do like Elvis did
It's a fine take on how the media mislead. On the REAL WMDs. The ones that are EASY to find. Weapons of Mass Distraction. You don't have to look under the furniture or behind the bed, like Semi-President Butch did at the Weapons of Mass Distraction Media Party last year.
They ARE part of the furniture.
Read on for a few excerpts.
There needn't be a media conspiracy here, not beyond the ones we already know, to account for the obsessive-compulsive coverage of this Summer's showcase disappearances. While the Bush White House appears to jump the shark - it's falling in the ratings, but who's going to step up and cancel it? - sympathetic executives naturally counterprogram. The networks, staffed by intelligence assets and owned by oligarchs and arms peddlers, run instead homespun mysteries to consume the attention and care of the citizen-audience.
I found
this consideration of the Mystery of the Missing Persons Coverage interesting; that "the most effective kinds of distraction or sublimation are those that echo or harmonize with the concerns they seek to distract us from."
People are disappearing, and not just in Aruba. They're being lifted right off their American feet and bundled off to Homeland gulags. Constitutionality isn't what it used to be, and what it used to be isn't what it presumed to be. Common sense is absent, mass demonstrations go unreported, and invisible ballots go missing. So maybe it's perfectly understandable why Americans should be trained to transfer their anxieties to Natalee Holloway or Olivia Newton John's boyfriend. There, their worries will be rewarded with neither demands nor expectations placed upon them. Unlike their political and even parapolitical concerns, which threaten to call people out of their armchairs, even if their worries haven't sharpened beyond a vague sense of dread.
What to do? Like Elvis, you can shoot out the television, but America has left the building. Left behind is an America-shaped void that a lot of people still want to call home, because it plays one on TV.
Have you ever read a more succinct description of the media/corporate/PermaGov interface?
"The networks, staffed by intelligence assets and owned by oligarchs and arms peddlers..."
Yup.
I would add here that one of the top rated series on TV (It was THE top rated show last week, according to Nielsen)...and probably among the most expensively produced ones also, if polish and finely edited tech shots are any indication...is the CBS series "Without A Trace." Heroic FBI people with real human problems find missing persons with WORSE ones.
If we had REAL "reality TV", they would make a show about the people who pull the strings (or at the very least react to strings that are pulled by chance and the universe) in order to CONTROL this Weapons of Mass Distraction puppet show,
Call it "Without A Trance."
Or maybe a show about those of us who blindly consume this incredibly refined garbage.
"Without a Chance"
Those of us here who DO watch this stuff in some sort of unquestioning mode...and I include any and all network news in that description, because it's just another series, really...please raise your hands.
Be sure to drop the channel changer first.
"Step AWAY from the TV...and DROP THAT WEAPON!!!"
(You be betta off if you did. WAY betta off. TV is betta off when it's off.)
