'President Bush yesterday called for limiting asbestos lawsuits...
..."The system is not fair," Bush said at a forum outside Detroit. "It's not fair to those who are getting sued, and it's not fair for those who justly deserve compensation. These asbestos suits have bankrupted a lot of companies, and that affects the workers here in Michigan and around the country."' from: Bush calls for limits on asbestos lawsuits.
So George Bush thinks that lawsuits filed by people to pay for the costs of their exposures to asbestos are "not fair to those who are getting sued" and "have bankrupted a lot of companies". It's too bad that he doesn't extend those same concerns to our Senior Citizen's.
Now these asbestos using companies are being sued because they are responsible for their actions. But it's sometimes a hardship for them to pay for their responsibilities and George Bush wants to get those companies off the hook.
Sometimes Senior Citizens are evicted because they are responsible for the mortgage on a house and now can't afford the payments, correct? Well, that would be a real hardship on those Senior Citizens wouldn't it? Why don't we let those Seniors off the hook as well?
If we let an asbestos company minimize or evade their responsibilities, shouldn't we extend the same courtesy to our Senior Americans? Let's let those Senior Citizens just stop paying their mortgage and avoid the penalty of losing their houses. If Seniors can minimize the costs of their own actions (just as asbestos using companies want to minimize the costs of their own actions), then Senior Citizens can probably afford a cut in Social Security payments. Bail outs could be a big part of an answer to concerns about Social Security.
It's true that some mortgage and lending companies would be harmed by this act of "conservative compassionism" for Seniors, but its just as true that some people will be harmed by George Bush's proposed "corporate compassion" asbestos bill.
I say, if it's a good idea to bail out corporations from their financial responsibilities, it's a good idea to bail out Senior Citizens from their financial responsibilities as well....
