I write and perform for
"Big News," a live news-based sketch comedy show that puts up a brand new show each Thursday night at 8. Each show features an all-new collection of sketches built around the news events of the preceding seven-day period, concluding with a mock "newscast." Each show also features a special guest standup; the comedians we've had over the years have included Emo Phillips, Patton Oswalt, Judy Tenuta, Rick Overton, and Phil LaMarr. In three and a half years, we've done over 175 one-hour shows, and not one was the same.
While we put comedy first and foremost, the political leanings of our cast and writers are definitely in keeping with those of most of the members of this website. We take pride in the fact that we mocked this administration's incompetence, venality and corruption from our beginnings in December of 2002. And we don't limit our aim at Republicans; Joementum's bootlicking and other exhibitions of spinelessness by Congressional Democrats are frequent wellsprings of comic inspiration.
The Chicago Tribune has called us "the best show to see when you're next in L.A.," and the L.A. Weekly has recommended us. So any of you in the L.A. area on a Thursday night, please head down to I.O. West in Hollywood and check us out. Tickets are just $10, and your ticket will usually also be a two-for-one coupon for your next show. (Next week, June 8, is a special event, the L.A. Improv Festival, and I believe tickets are $20 that week only.)
And for those of you who live outside the L.A. area or who can't make a Thursday night performance, we make an audio podcast of each week's show available a few days after it goes up. You can go to iTunes and download copies of each week's show, or you can also hear them on our website.
Plus, if any of you would like submit sketches for the show or two-line jokes for the newscast, anyone is welcome to submit. I can get information about submissions if anyone is interested.
So please come to the show, check out the website, and listen to our podcasts. The performers and writers (headed by Michael McCarthy, the show's creator and host and a former writer for "Saturday Night Live") are a very talented crew, and however the events of the week result in a show you'll be entertained.
(I hope this diary doesn't violate any rules - I checked whether anything restricted this type of promotion and I didn't see anything. If I have violated any such rule I beg your forgiveness!!)
