Okay, so maybe "surges" is one of those silly words the media use to grab attention. Nevertheless, this poll suggests more New Yorkers are getting behind Howard Dean, while the other candidates aren't doing much here.
The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion poll reports today that Howard Dean is up 8 percentage points since October (Marist's last NY poll) in a poll of 544 New York State registered Democrats. Support for other candidates is dropping or unchanged (although Sharpton does get a 3-percentage-point uptick.
The AP reports:
"The poll, from Marist College's Institute for Public Opinion, had the former Vermont governor favored by 26 percent of Democratic voters surveyed with Sen. Joseph Lieberman of neighboring Connecticut at 12 percent and retired Gen. Wesley Clark backed by 10 percent of the Democrats. None of the other contenders cracked double digits in the new poll. Twenty-six percent of Democrats said they were undecided. An October poll from Marist had Dean leading Lieberman, 18 percent to 16 percent, with Clark at 14 percent among New York Democrats."
