Last week Joe Lieberman made a campaign stop at Kevin's Community Center in Newtown, CT.
http://www.kevinscommunitycenter.org/...
to highlight the need for better healthcare in the United States.
According to the article in our local paper, The Newtown Bee, it was a
chance for him [Lieberman] to tout several health care proposals he supports, including the establishment of a national health care plan for small businesses
This really torks me because he used a volunteer clinic to highlight what's wrong with our healthcare system. The point is we shouldn't have to EVER rely on volunteer clinics in the richest country in the world. I'm sick of the "thousand points of light" method of taking care of our citizens.
Here's what Lieberman said back in 2004:
I want to create "Medikids." Every baby born in America will leave the hospital not just with a birth certificate but with a Medikids card that will guarantee them health insurance up until the age of 25. You won't have to go down to the welfare office to sign up. You won't be mandated if you don't want to buy plans to cover health insurance. As president, I'm going to bring the right priorities: I will make every American currently uninsured eligible for a high-quality, affordable health insurance.
Source: Democratic Primary Debate, Albuquerque New Mexico Sep 4, 2003 So I looked back to 1998 (through his voting record) and found only one statement on medicare. I saw no evidence of Lieberman introducing any legislation dedicated to solving the healthcare crisis. His visit to the free clinic in town was just a politician's ploy to highlight the fact that he hasn't really been too concerned about the "un" and "underinsured" in this country for a long time, so Lieberman found himself at a
hastily arranged campaign stop just days before the Senator goes head-to-head
....with Ned Lamont.
This is exactly the problem with Lieberman and other politicians who are supposed to represent us. They come out of the woodwork at times like this to try to convince us that they've really, really been trying very hard to produce legislation that benefits their constituents.
It IS the Iraq War, but it's more than that. The insiders in DC don't understand that the electorate can see right through the phoniness, the corporate coziness, the way things DON'T work for the PEOPLE any more. And so it's time for Joe to go.
