Hard on the heels of the report that the
U.S. is considering alternatives to the governing council, we have this:
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The deteriorating security situation may delay drafting the country's new constitution, a key step in the return to Iraqi sovereignty, a senior Iraqi official said Sunday.
and this:
The coalition's chief administrator L. Paul Bremer said the Governing Council had to make progress on the constitutional issue.
"They are required by the terms of Resolution 1511 in the Security Council to provide a timeline and a process for how they're going to write a constitution, and they have to do that within the next month," he said.
So there you are. We must defend the U.N. Resolutions. Get the tanks ready and somebody get Tommy Franks back over there!
As I asked over at Atrios, isn't it possible that the Governing Council is considering removing the hands of our administration from their asses and striking out independently? I have no idea just how beholden they are to the people who placed them on the council, but wouldn't it be ironic if they suddenly decided to, you know, run their own show?
