A nerve has deffinetly been struck on the die hard right.
I sent the following email to a republican co-worker this morning. With the subject "Moving the Goalposts"
Scott McClellan (WH Press Secretary): "If anyone in this administration was involved in it [the improper disclosure of an undercover CIA operative's identity], they would no longer be in this administration."
September 30, 2003
GW Bush: "If somebody did leak classified information, I'd like to know it, and we'll take the appropriate action."
Today:
GW Bush: "If someone committed a crime, they will no longer work in my administration."
The reply to this email is pretty indicitave of the attitude I am hearing from most Repugs who just don't want to admit that their boy has done wrong.
Response from co-worker:
Did you know that the Lady in Question
Has an office in Langley
Her car has a Langley parking Sticker
Drives there 5 days a week
Has told he neighbors during a Barbeque that she worked for the CIA
Has not had an out of the Country posting in several years.
In short she is not an under cover agent, and telling someone that she works for the CIA is no different than explaining the Director of the CIA works for them as well.
No law was broken, and the last I heard rove may have been informed of it by the reporter instead of the other way around.
Better check your sources, they seem so desperate to find a problem, that they are making things up again...
Now bear in mind that the quotes I sent to this particular co-worker also include links to WH press briefings.
My response was simply to ask him what his sources were. Then it all became clear....
Reply:
The Hugh Hewitt radio show, who was Quoting from an article in the New York Times and Fox News who was showing clips of a White House press conference. I also heard good old Rush talking about it last week while I was on Vacation.....
I know I know, stop laughing. It's not funny. Well, yes it is pretty funny. The old counter-spin and retaliate tactic of the non-thinking right.
So can someone give me a pice of gold I can shoot back to this guy in an email? I am through trying to link to verifiable sources and prove him wrong with facts. I just need a good zinger. Anyone?
Update [2005-7-19 15:35:55 by Blood Clot]:
A buddy of mine jumped on a respose before I could get one off.
Better check your sources, I seriously doubt that this would be such a big deal if what you listed is true. And for everyone’s information Rush Limbaugh is not considered a credible source.
Reply:
At least they check their sources before reporting….
I hesitate to ask, but what do you consider a credible source….
My buddy replied with this gem:
Any source which is not owned by a right wing zealot (so this would exclude fox news), or that doesn’t have a direct link to a political or ideological slant toward one side or the other. There are many out there, take your pick. Regardless the source, you are defending the indefensible. Look at the facts at the lowest possible level of understanding, Karl Rove made public the name of an undercover CIA operative which is a crime and during a time of war is considered treason. It is as simple as that. Don’t try and obscure the obvious with technical legal jargon or he said/ she said crap. Look at the basic facts and it should be clear. If you still do not see this you are either blind, uniformed or stupid. No offense to anyone who falls into one of these 3 categories.
