Arafat is dead. By now, we all know that. I was surprised to see that kos hadn't covered this in a front page entry or that none of the many related diaries made it to the recommended section.
I do not claim to be any kind of expert on the complicated Israeli/Palestinian situation but I remember being somewhat surprised when I heard Kerry basically endorsing the Bush administration's views on Israel's actions during the election campaign. It then became a dead issue. Bush did virtually nothing about the peace process during his first term. Now that Arafat is dead, he has no excuse to ignore it any longer. The neo-cons certainly have their own aganda for Israel and Israel continues to be the largest recipient of US foreign aid (not counting the current Iraq reconstruction effort).
So, as a Canadian, I'm asking those with more knowledge than me to outline the differences between the
Republican platform and the
Democrat platform regarding the future of the peace process because the Democrats will obviously have to make their policies clear very soon. And I think people on this site should be talking about it. Will this be a purely bipartisan effort or do the two parties have issues they need to work out?
Note: For those of you who don't understand the "elephant in the living room" reference, it refers to how we sometimes tend to ignore the largest problem in the house even though it's so glaringly obvious.
