I've been lurking around Daily Kos for several months, posting comments here and there, but never felt the need to post a diary. There are so many eloquent writers out there and diaries fly off the list so fast, it just seemed futile, that is until I just heard the
story on CNN about a new town being proposed just outside of Naples, Florida. Why would that raise my blood pressure to boiling you ask? This new town, Ave Maria, Florida, is being bankrolled by the founder of Domino's Pizza, Thomas Monaghan, and he wants it governed to "strict Roman Catholic principles" This "stepford wives" community would have no place to get an abortion, not allow pornography, or the ability to purchase birth control.
More below..................
According to the article,
Homebuyers in Ave Maria will own their property outright. But Monaghan and Barron Collier will control all commercial real estate in the town, meaning they could insert provisions in leases to restrict the sale of certain items.
And would he only allow Domino's Pizza delivery? Which would be reason enough never to move there!!
What have we turned this country into, people? And maybe more importantly, how do we get it back? Now, the article does state that civil libertarians are looking at the constitutionality of such a proposal....thank GOD!!! But I still shake my head in wonderment about how we got to this point.
Maybe I should interject here that I am (ok, was) a Catholic. I spent every Saturday morning from age 6-14 in Catechism, then every Wednesday night from 15-18 in religion class, and then the next 4 years in a Catholic college. I come from a large family with priests and nuns among our ranks. I could go on and on about why I think Catholicism has become flawed, but beyond that who would want to live in a community where everyone must follow the same doctrine? Doesn't this sound alot like the radical Mormon sects and we know how those have turned out.
Gov. Jeb Bush, at the site's groundbreaking earlier this month, lauded the development as a new kind of town where faith and freedom will merge to create a community of like-minded citizens. Bush, a convert to Catholicism, did not speak specifically to the proposed restrictions.
I have numerous reasons why I am a fallen away Catholic, but maybe the easiest was right here.....I wouldn't want to be a member of something that counts Jeb Bush among it's membership!!
So, I won't be ordering a Domino's Pizza tonight, which by the way......sucks, Mr. Monaghan!! AND, I won't be buying any property outside of Naples, Florida.
