Beauty and the Beast
- Supermodel Petra Nemcova appeared on cover of the 2003 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, but she recently survived the last week's Asian tsunami by hanging onto a tree for eight hours. Tragically her boyfriend, photographer Simon Atlee, was swept away and is still missing.
Scrooge and his Money
- U.S. boosts tsunami aid from $35 million to $350 million. In a QUICK DECISION to counter being stung by charges of tightfistedness and a slowness to respond, Bush makes tenfold increase in pledged amount. Only after hearing criticism and watching smaller countries literally give more than the U.S. had pledged did we respond. We spend $350 million in two or three days of the Iraq War.
Warriors and their Guns
- Not surprisingly our warfare state is stingy on help. Can we improve ourselves? Yearly,
U.S. spends $450 billion on military, but less than $15 billion to help the world's poorest countries fight disease, educate their children, and protect the environment. This is a mistake, because military approaches alone cannot make America safe. Only shared prosperity can truly make the planet secure. The United States should be investing much more in peaceful economic development.
SUV Owners vs Rickshaw Cabbies
- U.S. visionaries are transforming Kabul, Afghanistan, into an American image, a city clearly demarcated between rich and poor, a garrison state that protects the rich but refuses the poor the same security. However, like rural and slum America, the Afghan drug trade is booming, representing at least 60% of its GDP.
Criminal Politicians and their Laws
- Who needs ethics when you're in power? Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert will probably replace the Chair of the powerful Ethics Committee, Joel Hefley (R-Colo), for speaking out against Tom Delay in 2004. It doesn't pay to be honest in Republican land.
