Wapo just now:
"I apologized because I should have told him about this much sooner," Woodward said in an interview. "I explained in detail that I was trying to protect my sources. That's Job No. 1 in a case like this. . . .
"I hunkered down. I'm in the habit of keeping secrets. I didn't want anything out there that was going to get me subpoenaed."...
The Post disclosed this morning that Woodward testified under oath Monday in the CIA leak case. Woodward said today he had gotten permission from one of his sources, White House chief of staff Andrew H. Card Jr., to disclose that he had testified that their June 20, 2003 conversation did not involve Plame, the wife of administration critic Joseph C. Wilson IV.
To my way of thinking, Woodward's source must be Cheney; see BELOW.
Why Cheney? boocoo reasons:
firstly, clearly this was a major interview for which Woodward had prepared pages and pages of questions.
Secondly, Woodward had the confidence of Cheney as well as Bush.
Thirdly, Cheney knows the Grand Jury proceedings will be confidential, at least for the time being.
Fourthly, Cheney was motivated to discredit Wilson.
Fifth, nobody else would have had the stones to divulge this stuff, and
sixth and most important, this information was given to Fitzgerald by somebody who wanted badly to save Libby's ass, right after he was indicted...and who had a way to do it...since Cheney clearly had the info, if he leaked it somewhere else, then Libby, the thinking went, would be somewhat less culpable. The leaker (who seems to be Cheney) is taking a chance with the "analyst not operative" ploy, and is also taking the chance that Fitz won't try to indict a sitting Vice president for this "minor" misstep. Of course, Cheney also has the option of resigning for "health reasons."
This has Cheney written all over it.
