ANNOUNCING A MARCH ON WASHINGTON AGAINST THE IRAQ WAR: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2005, ON THE MALL. Or at least the wish for one. Logistics, anyone?
I'm a bit baffled by the lack of planning on the part of left-minded organizations and leaders for a massive peace march on Washington, DC in the next few weeks. A solid majority now of Americans think the war in Iraq was a huge mistake--the timing could not be more fortuitous!! Why aren't we planning to send a million people to the Mall on or around September 11 to mark the fourth anniversary of the attacks with a huge show of rejection of Bush's bogus response to it in Iraq? I mean, if we can pull together a few hundred thousand for abortion rights and gay rights, as we have over the last ten years on the Mall, why can't we do the same against this hideous war that's already killed nearly 2000 American soldiers and countless thousands of Iraqi citizens? Are we so feeble that we're afraid of marching on the nation's capital? And hey, while we're at it--could someone please tell Joan Baez to WRITE SOME NEW FUCKING SONGS if she wants an invitation? Singing "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" at Camp Crawford paints the growing antiwar movement as a nostalgic revival of the 60s rather than as a response to the specific contexts of THIS war in THIS decade. Could someone link to a GOOD non-ancient-Mick-Jagger anti-war song that's been produced specifically for THIS war?
