Well, I posted on this before, but at that time much of the story was unconfirmed. It was posted as
an entry at Healing Iraq, and in fact I think this is where the story broke. It involves two young Iraqis delivering tiles and toilets who were (this part is now confirmed) stopped and taken by a group of soldiers. Both of them were allegedly pushed into a strong cold river by US Army, one drowned, the other survived to tell the tale. The soldiers reportedly laughed as they pushed the Iraqi's in while they pleaded and complained they could not even swim.
The comment section for the post at Healing Iraq contained most depraved suggestions about the matter, such as the idea that the dead 19 year old, Zaydun, had really run away to avoid his upcoming marriage, convieniently turning his upcoming wedding from an emphasis to tradgedy into the reason for a lie. They found Zaydun's body on the river last week, however.
Slate now has an article in which many of the principles have been interviewed. Much is now confirmed. The soldiers did take the young men. They say they left them on the bridge from which the survivor claims they were pushed. Their truck was crushed and the boy is dead. The investigation is ongoing but the US side of the story doesn't hold much water if you ask me.
Pictures of the truck and Zaydun below.
Zaydun
The truck they were driving, crushed. The US Army makes no claims about this, they/we "don't know".
To follow this story, I suggest reading Healing Iraq.
