John McCain's financial advisor, Phil Gramm, in the Washington Times yesterday morning:

"We have sort of become a nation of whiners," he said. "You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline" despite a major export boom that is the primary reason that growth continues in the economy, he said.

"We've never been more dominant; we've never had more natural advantages than we have today," he said. "We have benefited greatly" from the globalization of the economy in the last 30 years. ...

"Misery sells newspapers," Mr. Gramm said. "Thank God the economy is not as bad as you read in the newspaper every day."

What you could read in the newspaper yesterday afternoon:

The Dow fell 236 points to 11,147.

The S&P 500 dropped 29 points to 1,244.

The Nasdaq composite lost shed than 2.5% of its value, losing nearly 60 points to 2,234.

Declining issues led advancers by a 2 to 1 margin.

And just this morning, we are greeted by this news:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Home foreclosure filings jumped 53 percent in June from a year earlier, although they were down 3 percent from May, and foreclosures are expected to rise further, real estate data firm RealtyTrac said on Thursday....

One out of every 501 U.S. households received a notice of default, auction sale or bank repossession in June, RealtyTrac said.

Clearly, the problem here is not that record numbers of people are losing their homes or the stock market's tanking. It's that Reuters and other news outlets, traders in misery, have the audacity to inform people about it.

And if you don't like your Republican economy and say so, America, well ... you're just a nation of ungrateful complainers! Or so says the man who's mentioned as McCain's pick for treasury secretary, and who's a former lobbyist suspiciously neck deep in the mortgage metldown.

Suck it up, shut up and carry on. Ya whiners. It's the Republican way.

(More discussion on Gramm's whining about whining is going on in dansac's recommended diary.)
