The Guardian is reporting the arrests of bloggers for inciting violence in the French riots.
"French bloggers held after Paris riots" I wonder what this type of news will do: fuel the anti-freedom of blogging troops, or fuel deep thought about freedom of speech?
"A 16-year-old French teenager and an 18-year-old of Ghanaian nationality are being questioned by Paris prosecutors, according to reports.
...
The pair have been placed under investigation, which is a step short of formal charges under French law, for "inciting harm to people and property over the internet".
...
French bloggers have been divided over their attitude to the riots. Some have tried to calm the situation, while others have tried to inflame the situation.
I'm not offering any real deep insight here, but found this as an interesting element of blogdom. I imagine this type of development will only increase, and something that all of us will be affected by in ways unimaginable... i.e. privacy acts and freedom of speech.
Knowing little about the inequalities in France that spurred the violence, I cannot speak in defense of or against what this news might represent. However, appreciating how unfair and rascist society can be, I can appreciate individuals using whatever means they have to garner support... even if the results are violence and destruction.
I believe the blogs I peruse are for the most part responsible, but realize the hateful and dangerous can use the internet (and have) for uncivilized purposes. And for that reason, I want to be protected and would support arrests. But who makes the decisions as to who is bad and who is good? Hard to leave it up to government these days because bias is so pronounced, and I fear those with good intentions being prosecuted while evil slides.
The way of the world: always interesting and for the most part [these days] scary.
