Because it is now clear that Sinclair Broadcasting Group, Inc. will not be deterred from running their hour-long smear of John Kerry, I think it is important to set up a center for debunking it, similar to the ones set up for the second and third presidential debates, where individual Kos members selected specific questions to transcribe, analyze and correct with the truth.
Although I think there is a very high possibility that this program will backfire on Sinclair, the Kos community needs to be prepared for other media organs to provide extra publicity and raise the profile of this smear, just as was done with the Swift Boat Vets for Lies. Please look in the extended entry if you would like to help out this effort!
First off, I am looking for people with extreme intestinal fortitude and a diminished gag reflex, who will be able to bring themselves to watch a portion of "A POW Story: Politics, Pressure and the Media" tonight on a Sinclair network affiliate. Because this program cannot be so easily divided as the debates were into specific questions, I am asking for volunteers to commit to watching and debunking individual four-minute segments.
If you want to volunteer, please do the following:
- Volunteer for a four-minute segment of the program.
- Create a diary with the title "Sinclair Debunking - Segment XX:XX" for your chosen segment.
- Post a note in this thread about your diary, and I will link to it in the header.
- Watch and record (VHS, TIVO, etc.) a four-minute segment of the program.
- Provide a transcript of your segment in the diary. Because the four minutes are arbitrary, it is OK to overlap a bit of the segments before and after, for the sake of continuity (i.e., don't cut it off mid-sentence).
- Note any lies, misrepresentations, distortions and the like in your diary and post corrections with links (if available). Be as thorough and concise as possible.
With a community effort, we can provide a central database of information that will discredit the Sinclair smears and will hopefully provide a useful counterpoint for those in other media networks to draw from if they choose to critique this show. Of course, they may require a bit of prodding and encouragement to do so.
My understanding is that the program will be one-hour without commercials, so I am dividing the program into 15 four-minute segments. If there are commercials, it will probably run approx. 42-44 minutes, in which case the last 4 segments will not be necessary. (Don't include commercials as part of your four minutes!)
DailyKos member dr z has provided a transcript of the "documentary" Stolen Honor, which will be featured as a major part of Sinclair's broadcast. It would be good to begin debunking efforts here, which can then be pasted in to the appropriate segment of the program below after it airs. Please give props and mojo to dr z for his effort - imagine the hours spent transcribing the entire program and be glad you didn't have to do that!
If you agree with this effort, but are unable to volunteer for a segment, please recommend this diary so more members will see it and be able to participate.
Links to individual diaries for each segment will be added here:
