Today at the end of Crossfire, Bob Novak predictably trotted out the "poor Joe Lieberman" story again, although he finished by noting the obvious -- that Lieberman's victim routine isn't really going to help the hapless senator.
Now that kind of propaganda (giving props to a losing Dem candidate) is what I expect out of Novak. But I'd come to believe that we could count on Paul Begala not to start reading from RNC blast faxes. I was wrong.
Apparently when his friends inside the Democratic establishment feel their hold on the party being threatened, Begala will say pretty much anything, no matter if it damages the Dems' chances next year.
Early in the week, Paul actually referred to comments by his "old friend, Zell Miller" in order take a swipe at Dean. Today, he piled on the Gore hate-fest, accusing the former VP of dividing the party. He then went on to explain that Lieberman is now "surging."
Paul Begala has been an inspiration to Democrats over the last few years on Crossfire, and it's ironic that he's now bashing the one candidate who's exhibited the kind of backbone and fire in the belly that Paul and James Carville have been calling for all this time. Sadly, I'm beginning to wonder if Begala has ever been sincere. More and more, he's sounding like another DLC clone who's more concerned about keep his friends in power than helping the Democratic Party in 2004.
