From what we know about John Ensign, it's probably fair to assume to that he's got the flexibility to twist himself into some unique *ahem* positions. Now we know that he's also capable of twisting facts into a deft piece of spin:
During a Monday interview on the conservative radio station KXNT in Las Vegas, Ensign also said that if he were to resign, the state would have to deal with "a second Senate race" next year, potentially allowing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to win reelection despite being personally unpopular back home.
"For the people who want to beat Harry Reid, you’d have a second Senate race [in 2010] and that takes the focus off Harry Reid," Ensign said in explaining his refusal to step down.
Sure, John. You're staying in office because you just want to help out the GOP. Yeah, right. If you believe that, then you'd also believe this whole affair has made his marriage stronger than ever.
"I am married to an extraordinary woman," Ensign told KXNT host Alan Stock, who has called on him to step aside. "I will tell people, Darlene and I are doing better than ever."
Ensign added: "This thing has drawn us together."
Well, clearly having an affair with your chief of staff's wife who also just happens to be another aide of yours is a great thing to do for your marriage. Better yet, it probably encourages your fellow Republicans to ask you for help on the campaign trail.
"A lot of people running for office next year, I've met with them. They actually want me to be involved with their campaigns."
Just who are those Republicans? Ensign won't say. But it's a safe bet even imaginary elephants in the sky are running away from him.
