Hi everyone,
It's been a while since I wrote, almost two months to be exact. I guess I needed some time to rest after the election season. I've had a change of heart on many things, including the whole "Intelligent Design" debate. I think that it should definitely be taught in public schools...
I've been reading a lot lately about how right-wingers want to include "Intelligent Design" in the public school science curriculum. They think that, since there are some holes in Darwin's theory of evolution, it's only fair that an alternative theory be posed.
I agree with them.
Darwin's theory should be scrutinized and questioned, and there should be alternatives examined. Here's the thing...those alternatives should be examined as thoroughly as Darwin's theory.
If right wingers want us to puncture holes in evolution, dissect it and mutate it, then we absolutely should. But let's examine the alternative "Intelligent Design" theory:
Intelligent Design is the idea that a supernatural being created itself out of thin air, then went on to invent a race of superior beings on a small planet somewhere in an impossibly-large-to-comprehend universe. He/She/It then went on to rule this race of beings with an iron fist, demanding nothing less than complete compliance with each of the laws that He/She/It created. When a law was broken, the beings had to grovel and repent, lest they be sent to an eternal abyss, characterized by unimaginable pain, suffering and heartache. Eventually, the "creator" would destroy the race that He/She/It created and go on to live into eternity, never dying or ceasing to exist.
Sounds pretty straight forward to me. Let's do it! But let's do it right. Every theory taught in science class should be examined and discussed equally. Let's allow public school teachers to have children question their religious beliefs and ponder the likelihood of the existence of God (I'm not saying that the idea of God is preposterous or anything, it's just kind of hard to swallow when you think about it).
