So today is caucus day here is Michigan. Calling it a caucus is really a misnomer since we don`t sit around and talk and then have an open vote. It really is a firehouse primary.
Over the past week I seriously thought about switching my vote, but then I decided that I would stay with Governor Dean. He may not have much hope of winning, but I still believe in his message and I want to try to make sure those points are raised at the convention and during the general campaign, if not by him, then by whoever the nominee will be.
Since the polls are saying that Kerry will run away with it, I was suprised to see so many people and so many supporters for the other candidates. Rev. Sharpton will probably win a few delegates. He was the only candidate to show up at an NAACP candidates forum, and much of Metro Detroit, white and black, is feeling disrespected.
At my caucus site, there were a ton of Dean volunteers and quite a few Kucinich supporters. There were 4 or 5 Clark people and 2 Kerry people. I was told turnout was going as expected.
I stopped my city`s other caucus site, for the other Congressional district as well. I met Congressman Kucinich there. I shook his hand and wished him luck, and was glad my coat was buttoned up over my Dean t-shirt. At that site there were a few Dean and Kucinich people and some Clark and Kerry but no Edwards.
Numbers should start coming in in about 90 minutes.
I still expect a Kerry victory but I doubt it will be the upper 50`s the poll showed.
It should be also be interesting to see how the internet voting plays out and what that might mean for the future.
