Dear Mr. Bush,
Below is an email I received today from close friends of mine who are having a baby. Their joyous news coincides with your announcement that you plan to attack their status and hopes as a family.
Marriage has been a lot of things throughout history, Mr. President - ask an anthropologist or a historian. It is an institution that both reflects and defines us as human beings. Right now, not through the actions of "a few" judges and local officials but through the commitment and love of hundreds of thousands of human beings, that institution is being redefined to include same-sex couples.
Your proposal is not merely a slap in the face of that love and commitment, it is a promise that the government will not act to protect their families when they are threatened by illness, discrimination, economic hardship or death. You are asking Americans to say, in our most sacred legal document, that we want these families - our friends, neighbors, daughters, sons, fathers, mothers, and loved ones - to dangle in the wind.
I don't understand how you can ask that of us, Mr. President. I don't understand how you could look a gay person in the eye and say that you respect her while using the full power of your office to deny her ability to love and be loved. I think history will prove you wrong about this "threat" to the institution of marriage. As a citizen who loves my country and as a close friend of gay parents, I will do everything I can to prevent this amendment from being added to our Constitution.
Sincerely,
m3

Hey all!
Bridget and I found out yesterday that we are going to be having a baby girl in July! Her name will be Katherine Laura. The due date is still estimated at July 21st, we'll see how close she stays to that! I'm feeling well and Bridget doesn't seem to be suffering too much from my excessive snoring.
Take care,
Anne Michelle
