Every year I hear about this terrible war on Christmas. It's usually the same exact complaints: privately own stores saying holiday instead of Christmas and a nativity scene being taken down in some county somewhere. This doesn't seem like a war on Christmas to me. No one is blowing up giant statues of Christ and no one cares if you do celebrate Christmas.
As a Christian I celebrate the holiday every year. Guess what? I know several atheist that enjoy the holiday too. They put up trees, they buy presents and they have Christmas dinner. They don't go to church, they don't believe in God and amazingly aren't trying to destroy the holiday for others.
The war is an imaginary one. The right is great for that. They create fake wars for fake causes and get their fellow wingnuts all excited over nothing. Fox News runs stories about stores selling holiday trees, people yell about how the left is trying to destroy their holiday yet somehow they are able to celebrate their holiday in the same way they always have; the one corporate America created for them.
That's right. They are worried about a war on Christmas that doesn't exist because the Christmas they are celebrating is already a pagan holiday trumped up by big corps to sell Christmas trees and electronics. They complain about nativity scenes being taken down while celebrating their savior's birth by spending more money, giving gifts people don't want and wishing for iPods made in China. Hurray for Christmas!
This isn't a war on anything but the right to be free from other people's religion. I respect that, and if it really offended someone for me to say Merry Christmas I wouldn't say it, but it doesn't. No one is afraid of your fake Santas or your plastic trees. They are annoyed by your self righteous, hypocritical manner of celebrating your religious holiday. Maybe this fictitious war would matter if more Christian gave to the needy rather than spoiling their kids with junk they will stop using in a month.
Put on your Santa hats, pour out some eggnog and relax a little. Enjoy the holiday with your fellow atheists, Jews and all the others. Just stop getting people worked on about a war on something you don't even celebrate correctly. Now, someone tell me where I can get some gingerbread cookies.
Oh, and Happy Kwanzaa everyone.
