Am I the only one incredibly depressed by this particular anniversary? I just spent a couple of hours cleaning the house and listening to the BBC World Service and it is nothing but sad stories. Bush exploiting the tragic differences of memory between the Russians and the Balts. Putin putting a ban on history books that speak of the Occupation of the Baltics. The BBC announcing, as though it is some kind of surprise claim, that Putin has given a speech announcing that Soviet citizens made more sacrifices than anyone else fighting against the Germans. The German Ambassador to Britain expressing concern that young Brits have more ignorance about contemporary Germany than any time since the end of the war, and less and less learn German in school every year. The only German they know is Hitler.
