I just got back to NYC from Philly, where I was helping register Democrats. Damn, what a great experience.
First, it was like the boards here at Kos brought to real life - the first time I've been with large groups of people who know what we're fighting.
Second, Democrats are on top of this thing. They've registered hundreds of thousands of Democrats for this race, people who otherwise would not have voted.
Third, on the ground, people are energized. One totally cute old black lady, limping by with a cane, shook the cane at me and said "I'm gonna use this hook to get that Bush out of the White House."
Lastly, remember this: we are on the side of decency. In the past, I'd let my Republican friends push that whole "you're just a guilty liberal who needs to feel morally superior" thing on me, which caused me to question my own political motives. Screw that! These people I was working with (whom I'd never met) were qualitatively DIFFERENT than the mass of Republicans I know and hear every day. These people loved their country intensively, they were deeply concerned about social justice. AND they were funny, unpretentious, considerate.
I know the map is tightening. But I don't know if polling methodology and models can pick up on what I felt on the ground. As a fellow volunteer said "I think Bush is going to be very surprised on election day."
Keep up the fight! Get out the vote!!
