According to WaPo, a new textbook called "The Bible and Its Influence" has been released for public schools
Bible Textbook for Public Schools planned
The colorful $50 book and forthcoming teacher's guide, covering both Old and New Testaments, are planned for semester-long or full-year courses starting next year.
I don't have a problem with courses in comparative religion (for older students) being taught in public schools. But I wonder, will there also be textbooks on the Koran, Talmud, Wicca Rede, Book of Tao etc.? Will they discuss both the good and bad histories of religion? The Inquisition? The Crusades?
Also, frankly, there is a lot of violence and pornography in the Bible. I don't think children should be exposed to (for example) fathers giving away their daughters as sex slaves, ripping up pregnant women, or all the mass murders, beatings, rapes, slavery and other adult things mentioned in the Bible. A good listing of some of these atrocities can be found here:
Bible Violence
I admit I haven't seen this book. According to it's authors, it's supposed to be non-offensive to everyone. To me it's just another way of sneaking religion into public schools (like ID).
